The Czech – Norwegian Research Programme aims to enhance basic and applied research and cooperation between the partner scientific institutions by bilateral financial support. The overall project objective:
Transplantation medicine in the area of ophthalmosurgery is facing two significant problems; the shortage of donor tissues and their relatively short ’shelf life’. During this project we aim to develop novel improved protocols for the preparation of corneal (endothelial and epithelial) and conjunctival (epithelial and goblet) cells for potential grafting in human medicine. The project consists of four main parts:
- Characterization and cultivation of corneal endothelial cells and engineering of grafts
- Reparation and potential self-regeneration of corneal endothelial cells
- Corneal, limbal and conjunctival cells: organ culture and engineering of grafts
- Testing DNA stability in cells from cornea and related tissues
